Potential Housing Tax Credit Fraud
NAHB has been made aware of a potential scam involving the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit. A member in Alabama has reported that their staff has been told by consumers that there is a way to get the $8,000 by check without having to buy a home. The offer is supposedly being made on the Internet and requires the consumer to pay a $50 fee.
NAHB takes this type of fraud very seriously, and will do everything we can to help our members and their customers avoid becoming victims.
If we can verify that suspicious or fraudulent activity involving the home buyer tax credit that could defraud our members or consumers is taking place, NAHB will warn the membership and also inform the appropriate federal law enforcement agencies.
We remind you that NAHB’s consumer Web site www.FederalHousingTaxCredit.com is an accurate resource for information about qualifying for and claiming the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit. FAQ’s can be found at: www.nahb.org/taxcreditmaterials.
